With HIPHOP culture backbone, BlackEyePatch, a street brand originating in Tokyo, is not just clothes, but the experience of wearing urban air and culture. The motif of “Asia in the World” inspired by Asian street corners and the landscape of Chinatown in the United States, and the design incorporating Japanese logos such as “Precaution for Handling” is strongly engraved in the viewer’s memory, even simple T-shirts and hoodies. What is essential to talking about the charm of this brand is its anonymity, not revealing the designer's face or name. In addition, he collaborated with PUMA and Manchester City F.C. to influence art, sports, and culture beyond the boundaries of streetwear.

HIPHOP's charm and ability to live

Opened on the 1st floor of Nagoya PARCO West Building in April this year, BlackEyePatch NAGOYA is the third store in Japan, following Tokyo, Harajuku, Osaka and Shinsaibashi. Based on a simple white wall and concrete floor, the displayed item looks like an object, creating a rough air feel like a street brand, it is a space like a street showcase. Since its birth, he has continued to make things centered on HIPHOP culture, incorporating the essence of rap and graffiti into fashion, and the attiture creates a style that projects the way of life.

Masaru Kasamatsu is also one of those who have long publicly stated that he likes HIPHOP. "The concept of hiphop itself is very difficult. When you try to find out what HIPHOP is, there is not one answer. But for me, it encourages me rather than what I say to others. Listening to it gives me a lot of power and I like it very much.”

He’s not only attracted to music stimulation. I am deeply fascinated by being able to relive the artist's life itself as a poem and as a record. “HIPHOP artists, for example, have been writing songs since I was 15, but 30 years later I turned 45. For each album, values and ideas change, and their behavior and social situation change. I think there is no other luxury art like this to be able to listen to the life of a poet for 30 years. Of course, one phrase is cut out with TikTok and played tens of thousands of times……That's good, but I'm attracted to the "document of change" of what songs they wrote and how they changed."

He was particularly struck by NORIKIYO's "Our Song (featuring MACCHO)" (2019). “There’s a phrase that says, ‘It’s meaningless to be born, but if you want it, you can’t add it,’ but I like it very much.”

The scenery of the mind that changed when I noticed

Prime Video Australia's original series "Oku no Hosomichi" based on the Booker Prize winning work, including the Japan-U.S. collaboration drama "TOKYO VICE" (2022) – "Memories of a Japanese prisoner of war-" (2025) and Korean Netflix movie Good News (October 17, 2025), Kasamatsu has tried to express himself not only in Japan but also overseas. "When you are abroad, nothing goes as you want (laughs). The food and time are different, and the sun is out until about 9 o'clock at night. When you are in such a place, you realize that there is no "natural". Even if you are ready, the lines will change. There are many moments that I don't know. As a result of this thought, now I don't know what I want to do most. You want to be very famous, do interesting plays, or you want money.……Even if you think about it, none of them say so much, “Maybe you don’t need it.” When I was in my twenties, I admired that I wanted to be famous, recognized, and appreciated, but now I don't admire anything. I got what I wanted, it was filled to a certain extent, and it was inevitable to look up. In the past, I had something I wanted to accomplish, so there were times when I was happy on the spot. But now it feels very calm in every scene.”

For the Korean movie Good News, which will be released on Netflix from October 17, I tried to make a film in Korea for the first time. "I introduced my fellow actors to the director and participated in this work with the friends I received. There are also many Korean superstars, including Sor Kyung and Hong Kyung, and Takayuki Yamada from Japan." The best memory of Korean filming is the advice I received from Mr. Yamada. "I wanted to introduce my fellow actors to Mr. Yamada, and I was talking around him during the launch. When one of the actors asked a question, Mr. Yamada said, "First, decide your age," "Determine a time limit, and if you exceed that, quit. Until then, I will die.” The weight of the word and the kindness you faced. If someone tells you that one day he will quit.…We all cried that night.”

The movie "Good News" is a story in which mysterious Fixers and elite Air Force Lieutenant So Gomyon and others gather to challenge a secret operation of an unending mixture of truth and lies in order to safely land a passenger plane hijacked by a Japanese Communist group in 1970. “The first challenge in Korea was a series of new discoveries.
